Title: Don’t Stress Over Prophylaxis: A Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis Review

Presenter: Rebecca Hilton, PharmD, BCCCP

Rebecca Hilton is a Critical Care Pharmacy Specialist at Mercy Hospital Southeast in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She is originally from Indiana and graduated from Butler University. She completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Powers Health in Munster, Indiana, followed by a PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida. Professionally, she enjoys volunteering for SCCM through the Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology Network with the Patient Safety Committee, and she serves as the Secretary of the SCCM Midwest Chapter.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply the known risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding to determine the need for stress ulcer prophylaxis
  • Differentiate between disease states of neurocritical care patients and their respective need for stress ulcer prophylaxis
  • Demonstrate understanding of the role of enteral nutrition in the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and need for stress ulcer prophylaxis.
  • Assess existing literature on the role of mechanical ventilation as a potential risk factor for stress ulcer prophylaxis.
